Why is osb smooth on one side
The indicated down-side is the rough side, correct? I'm thinking that by having the rough side against the studs, you end up with better shear strength. I seriously doubt that there is any structural implication either way. But checking with the manufacturer is of course the best bet. Let us know what you find. Shawn I just called APA. They provide approval for most wood structural panel OSB and Plywood. They stated that they do not have special requirements for a specific side up or down.
However, they stated that some manufactures like to have the rough side up for safety issues. I used two coats of Heinz 57 latex I got for free at the local recycle center. Went on easy and covered well with none of the original ink showing through. I would probably go with the smooth side out and prime it good before actually painting it. Gives you the OSB for hanging stuff yet gives you a more finished look, if that's what you're after. Haven't done much research on this to be honest so if anyone has any inputs on that approach, it would be appreciated.
