What is rabbits eyesight like
Let me explain…. The cornea is the clear part that covers our irises the colored part; mine are brown as well as the front of the eyeball called the anterior chamber. Look at this picture of the human eye. The cornea is that front bulging clear part. Never mind the rest, but look at how small that portion of the entire eyeball globe is. In fact, you can sort of see the amount of clear cornea in the photo above. So cool! Just like us, rabbits need Vitamin A for good vision. Vitamin A is only found in animal tissue, but we plant-eaters yes, I am a vegetarian too can get ample pre-cursors to Vitamin A in our diets by eating plants rich in Beta-carotene.
So, should you load your rabbits up with Carrots? Rabbits will get all that they require in high-quality hay , a varied diet , and high-quality pellets in small amounts if you give your rabbits pellets. Read more about vitamin and mineral requirements here.
So, we know that rabbits can see almost everywhere, but, how well do they see? Binocular vision is the process by which we can see objects in three dimensions; information from two eyes is necessary. Therefore, rabbits view much of the world in just two dimensions. You can see below in a fine example of my graphic art skills , that most of what rabbits see is two-dimensional. There are some nifty tricks that both we and rabbits use to help perceive object location.
This helps all of us differentiate near objects from distant ones. I feel some more science stuff coming… and maybe some Lord of the Rings talk too! Look up from your screen and turn your head side to side or up and down watching the objects in front of you.
Now realize that when you do this, the objects closer to you seem to move more than those further away. The brain figures out that the amount of perceived motion indicates which objects are nearer than others. Rabbits do this by bobbing their heads up and down. But the screen is flat; two-dimensional. So… how does your brain convert this flat object into a vision with dimension and depth?
It is all based on size difference. It is the same with rabbits. So then, how did Frodo look so much smaller when he was sitting beside Gandalf in the horse-drawn cart?
Well, it is true that the hobbits had stand-ins of much smaller stature for many scenes, but only when we would not notice the different faces. In the scene where Gandalf, the tall wizard, and Frodo, the little hobbit, sit side-by-side in the cart, Frodo is actually sitting in a bench further back! This link discusses the use of these tricks of visual perception in the LOTR movies. Check it out! The cornea and lens are both responsible for overall vision, but it is the ability of the lens to change shape which lets us change our point of focus.
We humans can, for example, focus on these words and then look up and focus on something far away. Aside from bendable lenses, we have strong ciliary muscles, which are the muscles responsible for doing this.
Rabbits have super large prominent corneas which allow them to see almost everything, but… their lenses suck and their ciliary bodies are poorly developed. Another super cool feature of rabbit vision is their ability not just to see all around themselves, but to actually do this all at once! Oct 26, Vianney Mrs. Elliott's class Sep 3, This article is interesting because, it states about vitamin A which is great for your eyes. It reminds me about last years frog dissection because it brought back the memory of the frog's blue and green eyes. I can infer that the rabbits can see at night.
I can infer that being able to see is important for rabbits so that they can see predators from far away. I wonder if lettuce is good for some other thing like the heart, pressure etc. I predict tomorrow's wonder will be about taste and knowing when something is sweet or salty.

So, why can't rabbits perceive other colors? Let's analyse their color vision: Cones : detect color under well-lit conditions photopic vision.
Rabbits have about 18, per sq. About 10x less than humans. In other words, rabbits are slightly colorblind by human standards. Rabbits have about , per sq. About 2x the amount of humans. This means that rabbits can see much better in the dark. Here is a summary of the differences between the human eye and a rabbit's vision : Field of view : rabbits have a much larger field of view than humans as their eyes are located at the sides of their face.
Depth of view : humans have a larger depth of view thanks to our binocular vision, allowing us to mostly see in 3D, whereas rabbits have a more narrow binocular vision and mostly use their monocular vision to watch out for predators.
Cones : rabbits have about 10x less cones than humans. Making them colorblind by human standards. Colors : rabbits mostly see blues and greens, whereas humans can mostly see red, blue and green. Rods: rabbits have about 2x the amount of rods that humans have. Allowing them to see much better at dusk or dawn. Sensitivity to light : rabbits are 8x more sensitive to light than humans. Grainy vision : rabbits have a more grainy vision than humans.
Rabbits are born with closed eyelids They open their eyelids when they're about 10 days old Rabbits have a third eyelid Rabbits blink once every approximately 5 minutes.
